Indigestion is among the most common health troubles that may occur due to a variety of reasons. It is not necessarily a result of a viral or bacterial infection. It is a functional disorder that hampers the normal process of the stomach to accept and digest food, and send it to the small intestine.
Foods That May Cause Indigestion
Any kind of food that has a high content of oils or fats may be difficult for the stomach to digest. Foods with strong spices, ready-made fast foods, and preserved or frozen foods may also result in indigestion at times. Excessive consumption of any food or drink that has a high content of caffeine such as coffee or chocolates may also cause indigestion. A high fiber diet that is difficult for the stomach to digest may also produce acid or cause indigestion. Indigestion is more likely to occur when a person is not used to eating a particular type of food. So the stomach may not be accustomed to such a diet and may not digest it properly.
Particular Ingredients That Produce Acidity
Carbonated drinks can be the cause of indigestion if consumed in excess quantities. Cigarette smoking is also known to result in digestive troubles when it continued over a prolonged period of time. High consumption of alcohol makes it difficult for the stomach to digest, and produces acid. Some people are allergic to lactose based foods, and any such products may result in indigestion for them.
Stressful Lifestyle
When a person eats any kind of food under stress or anxiety, the stomach may not be able to digest it properly. Under an emotionally charged situation, or a hyperactive state of mind the digestion may become poor. Harried lifestyle, tendency of nervousness, and continuous high levels of anxiety or worry may also produce indigestion in many people.
Medical Reasons of Indigestion
Inflammatory stomach or the pancreas, gastric ulcer, gallstone, or any other ailments of the stomach or intestines may contribute to indigestion as a side effect. Gastritis patients usually suffer from indigestion too. Certain medications, especially pain relievers and some antibiotics are also known to produce indigestion. Therefore, when the physician prescribes such medication, he may also prescribe an additional medication to curb indigestion.
Indigestion is becoming increasingly common in today’s times, considering the more stressful lifestyles, lack of exercise and fitness, and high intake of fast foods, carbonated drinks, caffeinated products, tobacco and alcohol.
